Acupuncture

60-90 minutes: $35-$100

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used forms of medicine in the world. Originating in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is currently one of the most thoroughly researched, practiced, and respected forms of complementary medicine available anywhere.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, your overall health is determined by the quality of the Qi (energy) flow through the natural pathways of your body (meridians). Acupuncture uses a variety of techniques, including placing very thin sterile needles into specific points on the body, to stimulate and improve your Qi flow. The many benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Pain reduction
  • Stress and tension relief
  • Increased energy levels
  • Stronger digestion
  • Relief from bad habits and addictions
  • Greater sense of overall health and well-being

Tui Na

15 minutes: $35

Tui Na is an ancient form of bodywork that is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We can use a variety of manipulations along the meridians (energy pathways) to both relax your muscles and stimulate the flow of energy (Qi) to reduce pain and improve function. By treating both the physical (musculature) and energetic (Qi) levels of your body at the same time, we can often achieve longer-lasting results than what you might get from a conventional massage therapy session.

Infrared Therapy

15 minutes: $10

Infrared therapy involves the use of an infrared lamp applied to the affected area.

Most of them emit not only infrared waves (low level laser), but red, orange, and yellow light too. Infrared heat lamps transmit invisible infrared rays (light waves) deep into your body, all the way to your muscles, nerves, and bones.

The infrared wavelength is felt as gentle to moderate heat, and proven through clinical studies to penetrate deeply into your tissues and improve blood circulation by 400% within a few minutes!

This improved blood flow brings pain-relief and healing components and speeds up recovery from any injury in your tissues or skin.

Cupping

15 minutes: $35

Cupping has been a part of Chinese Medicine for over 2,500 years. It relieves aches and pains, improves circulation, and also helps with respiratory and digestive issues. Cupping involves placing specialized "cups" on the affected areas of your body.  Once applied, the cups use suction to draw your skin up into the cups, creating what we call a "biscuit".

Properly applied, cupping doesn't hurt — it simply draws up the skin, fascia and muscle, and brings in fresh blood to that area of your body. This can facilitate the movement of waste products out of the injured area as well as drawing in fresh, new blood.  The end result is a reduction in pain, more mobility and range of motion and greater overall sense of health and well-being.

Acupressure

15 minutes: $45

Acupressure is based on one the most ancient principles of healing — that simply touching a specific point on the body will release stress and improve health in the body. In an acupressure session, we apply firm pressure directly to these "points" on your body, which can relieve muscle tension and improve circulation, resulting in less pain. This simple and powerful technique has been shown to very effective in treating headaches, backaches, and even insomnia.

Chinese and Western Herbology

Variable: $25-$100

Chinese herbal medicine is a 2,000 year old tradition using naturally occurring substances — including herbs — to enhance one's health and vitality. As opposed to most synthetic pharmaceuticals, the foundation of this approach is to support the body's natural self-healing mechanisms and abilities, while minimizing the risk of side-effects.

Since each patient has different needs, we carefully select and combine a variety of herbs (usually from 3 up to 20) that will achieve optimal results for your unique situation. We prescribe high-quality, professional-grade herbal medicines that are available only to qualified licensed professionals and are cGMP compliant, free of pharmaceuticals and regularly tested for bacteria, viruses, fungi and heavy metals.

Western herbal medicine also has an ancient history, going back to the time of the Romans.  Western herbal medicines are usually prescribed similarly to Western pharmaceuticals -- as "singles" or, in certain situations, similarly to Chinese herbal medicines, as formulas.  Each patient is unique and therefore warrants a unique herbal prescription, whether "Western", "Chinese" or a combination of both.

A note about Medicare acupuncture coverage for chronic low back pain:

The CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) covers acupuncture services for chronic lower back pain (cLBP) but does not recognize acupuncturists as providers of this service. This lack of recognition prevents much of the profession from readily treating Medicare beneficiaries for chronic pain using acupuncture. The resulting barrier inhibits those with the most expertise and training in acupuncture from providing these services.

So, what can we do?  Let your State Representative know by texting "Acupuncture Patient" to "52886" which shows you support H.R. 3133.

Obtaining provider status (H.R. 3133) under Medicare would allow acupuncturists to directly bill Medicare for covered services we provide to Medicare beneficiaries (generally those 65 and older). This recognition is critical to advancing the acupuncturist profession, as it would greatly expand access to qualified acupuncturists.

Medicare recognition would also help the acupuncture profession collect and generate data on not only the effectiveness of acupuncture but also highlight its lower cost of service versus other forms of allopathic/western medicines like drugs and surgery.
